Presenter: Robert Stanton BHMSc (Hons) PhD, AEP, AES, ESSAM

Description: This professional development will examine the burden and cost of mental illness in Australia. It will discuss some myths and misconceptions about mental illness and frame recovery not as ‘what’s wrong with you’, rather, what happened to you’. We will look at the comorbidity of mental illness, not only as mental illnesses that co-occur, but with physical and other illnesses, and consider why this makes diagnosis and treatment challenging. This professional development will also discuss occupational risk for mental illness and how this opens potential opportunities for exercise professionals to screen and intervene. We will discuss some recent findings on exercise and mental health literacy that support the work we do and give evidence to the advocacy work done by ESSA, along with the findings of some recent studies on exercise and mental illness, and propose how to translate those findings to clinical practice. Finally, we will discuss Mental Health First Aid training and why this can be beneficial in and outside of the workplace setting to improve clinician/client communication.
