Exercise for the Pregnant and Postpartum Individual: A Shift in Professional Mindset

PRESENTER: Kimberly Brian, MS, ACSM-CEP, CCT; University of New Hampshire

BRIEF SUMMARY
This presentation will provide an overview of the history of exercise during pregnancy from past to present. We will discuss the benefits of exercise during pregnancy, and the physiologic changes that occur during pregnancy (cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, thermoregulatory) that affect the recommendations for exercise in this population. We will examine each trimester of pregnancy and provide examples of functional movement exercises to better prepare the prenatal client for the stresses of labor, delivery, and parenthood. The overtones of this discussion will focus on what pregnant women CAN do to improve outcomes rather than what they cannot do. Lastly, we will identify the importance of step-by-step progression back to regular exercise in the postpartum period, and the need for more structure and support of this population in return to exercise.

  4. Discover the variations in prenatal exercise prescription dependent on trimester and examine examples of functional exercises specific to this population.
  5. Identify the importance of step by step progression in postpartum exercise, and the need for more support in return to exercise.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Kim Brian is a clinical exercise physiologist who is passionate about the importance of exercise in special populations. Throughout her own perinatal experience, she recognized the gaps in widespread knowledge, guidance, and safety surrounding exercise in the prenatal and postpartum populations. She has since proposed, launched, and currently directs the University of New Hampshire Perinatal Exercise Initiative, which serves as a medically supervised clinical exercise program for pregnant and postpartum women.

Professor Brian received both her BS and MS degrees from the University of Delaware, and has an extensive clinical background working with a variety of special populations. She is an ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist, a CCI Certified Cardiographic Technician, and a certified Pre/Postnatal Performance Training Specialist. As a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of New Hampshire, she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in exercise science, and directs the the Clinical Cardiac Program, which offers cardiac rehabilitation, prevention, and telehealth.
