TITLE: Body Composition Assessment for Weight Management
PRESENTERS: Laurie Milliken, PhD and Tim Lohman, PhD
BRIEF SUMMARY
This webinar will focus on the most practical body composition assessment methods for monitoring weight loss. Commonly used techniques will be covered alongside strategies for reducing measurement error. Participants will also learn how measurement error affects the ability to detect true changes in body composition, helping them make more confident, clinically sound decisions in practice.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Identify the most commonly used body composition assessment methods for monitoring weight loss in clinical practice.
- Compare the strengths and limitations of each assessment method to determine the most appropriate tool for a given clinical setting.
- Apply practical strategies to reduce measurement error and improve the accuracy of body composition assessments.
- Explain how measurement error can affect the interpretation of changes in body composition over time.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Dr. Tim Lohman and Dr. Laurie Milliken are leading experts in body composition assessment and are co-editors of
ACSM's Body Composition Assessment and co-authors of
The Science of Long Term Weight Loss. Dr. Lohman is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Arizona and co-founder of the Global Health and Body Composition Institute (GHBCI), a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing health through body composition education and training. Dr. Milliken is an Associate Professor at university of Massachusetts Boston and co-founder of GHBCI. Together, they bring decades of research and clinical expertise to the fields of body composition assessment and weight management.

TITLE: Contemporary Obesity Treatment: Implications for Clinical Exercise Physiology
PRESENTER: John Jakicic, PhD
BRIEF SUMMARY
Obesity is a chronic health condition requiring ongoing and effective methods of treatment. Contemporary treatments for obesity are focused on broad health benefits, which go beyond weight loss and include contemporary pharmacotherapies. These treatments provide unique contemporary opportunities for physical activity and exercise, and clinical exercise physiologists may contribute to unique and effectives ways within these treatments. This session focuses on addressing these important obesity treatment opportunities within the context of clinical exercise physiology.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- To understand contemporary treatments for obesity.
- To understand how exercise plays a role in contemporary approaches for obesity.
- To understand how to implement person-center exercise and physical activity programming for the treatment of obesity.
- To understand how a clinical exercise physiologist can play an important role as a component of a comprehensive clinical team for the treatment of obesity..
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
John M. Jakicic, PhD is a Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center. His clinical research has focused on understanding the role of physical activity within the context of obesity treatment and related chronic health conditions. Trained as an exercise physiologist and also an ACSM Clinical Exercise Physiologist, he has authored the recent ACSM Consensus Paper focused on obesity treatment related to excess weight and adiposity. Key to his work has been an emphasis on person-centered approaches to physical activity and exercise within the context of comprehensive and contemporary obesity treatment.

TITLE: Fostering Positive Exercise Experiences for People of All Sizes
PRESENTER: Christy Greenleaf, PhD
BRIEF SUMMARY
Clinical exercise physiologists play an important role in shaping how individuals experience physical activity. This webinar will examine psychosocial factors that influence exercise experiences among people of all sizes, including the impact of weight-related stigma. Participants will learn evidence-informed strategies to foster size-inclusive, supportive, and enjoyable exercise environments that enhance motivation, confidence, engagement, and long-term physical activity participation.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Describe psychosocial factors that influence exercise experiences and physical activity participation among individuals across the weight spectrum.
- Explain how weight-related stigma can affect motivation, enjoyment, self-efficacy, and engagement in physical activity.
- Identify evidence-informed strategies for fostering size-inclusive and supportive exercise experiences.
- Apply person-centered approaches that promote autonomy, competence, and relatedness to support long-term physical activity participation.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Dr. Greenleaf’s research focuses on psychosocial aspects of weight, physical activity, and body image. In particular, she is curious about the lived experiences of individuals with larger bodies in health and fitness contexts and how weight bias, or negative attitudes and stereotypes toward individuals who appear to be overweight, manifests itself within physical activity settings. Dr. Greenleaf's research seeks to inform practices for creating and supporting size-inclusive physical activity environments. To date, she has focused on media representations of fat exercisers in a televised weight loss competition, women’s experiences related to plus-size exercise clothing and exercise motivation, as well as experiences of embodiment during physical activity. Most recently, she has begun exploring information on weight-inclusive and weight-neutral approaches to fitness and health directed toward fitness professionals.
