PRESENTER: Gil Spitz, MS; Baylor/St. Luke's Medical Center Liver Transplant Program

BRIEF SUMMARY

During the presenter will discuss the importance of exercise before and after liver transplant. He will review the effects of liver function on muscle mass and the importance of muscle mass to rehabilitation. He will also discuss the Fried Frailty and mobilization during the post-operative period.

  1. Understand the importance of liver function for maintaining muscle mass.
  2. Understand the components of the Fried Frailty Phenotype assessment.
  3. Understand the role of muscle mass in the post-op rehabilitation process.
  4. Understand the importance of post-op mobilization.
  5. Understand the importance/effectiveness of pre-habilitation.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Mr. Spitz earned a bachelor's and master's of science in Exercise Physiology from Humbodlt State University (Now CalPoly Humboldt) where he researched optimized training for first responders with a focus on firefighters. In 2019, he joined the Medical ICU team at Baylor/St. Luke's Medical Center, where he was tasked with assessing, developing, and enacting exercise plans for patients. In this setting, he was able to work with some of the most medically compromised patients including patients on ventilators, dialysis, and multiple medications. In 2021 he joined the Liver Transplant Program, where he implemented a program to assess patients post liver transplant for physical suitability, provided followed patients in the post-transplant setting, and recently developed a virtual pre-habilitation program aimed at improving post-transplant outcomes.
