The primary goal of the Advocacy Committee is to promote the profession of clinical exercise physiology.
To advance the profession of clinical exercise physiology, CEPA will educate important groups regarding the skill sets of clinical exercise physiologists. These groups include, but are not limited to physicians, other healthcare workers, hospital administrators, insurance carriers (both Medicare as well as commercial insurance), the fitness industry and the public. The Advocacy Committee will also work in tandem with the Legislative Committee to support the legislative efforts of clinical exercise physiologists throughout the country. See the Legislative page for updates on licensing efforts across the country.
Advocacy efforts also include developing and nurturing relationships with organizations which have an interest in areas where clinical exercise physiologists may work. Towards this end, we have developed a document to communicate "What is a CEP?" Feel free to share this with colleagues and anyone who asks, "What do you do?"
Currently, CEPA has been working with ACSM on the Exercise is MedicineTM initiative. We helped create the physician toolkit for the Exercise is MedicineTM website at www.exerciseismedicine.org and www.may-kithappen.org. Our ultimate goal with this on-going initiative is to encourage physicians to refer high-risk patients to clinical exercise physiologists for exercise prescriptions, and to increase exposure of clinical exercise physiologists to the general public. We still have much work to do on this and other initiatives and encourage members of CEPA to contact us on how to get involved.
